The primary goal of a pediatric hip ultrasound at CareWell Diagnostix is to assess the hip joint, surrounding soft tissues, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones in children. It is mainly utilized in newborns to detect developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a disorder where the hip joint’s ball and socket do not grow properly.

Why is Pediatric Hips Ultrasound Done?

When a pediatric hip ultrasound is ordered, it is done so because of suspicion or detection of DDH or because of risk factors such as a family history of DDH or being born breech.

Either the hip is developing typically, or the deformity is still there; this can reveal it either way. Additional hip ultrasounds may be necessary during your child’s DDH treatment to determine the hip joint’s proper alignment (e.g., while wearing a harness) and to track any progress made.

Pediatric hip ultrasonography tests are beneficial when searching for signs of hip joint fluid. Inflammation in the joints, such as accompanying an infection, can be indicated by this.

Frequently Asked
Questions

When is it appropriate to get an ultrasound of the hip?

Ultrasound imaging of the hip can reveal deformities or dislocations in the joint. Babies can undergo this procedure from the time they are born until they are around 6 to 8 months old.

In pediatrics, when might an ultrasound of the hip be indicated?

During the 6-week postpartum checkup, an ultrasound of the hips is typically performed to look for signs of hip laxity, sometimes known as “clicky hips,” in newborns.

When should a baby have an ultrasound of the hips?

There is an elevated risk of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in a newborn whose parents had a history of the condition or whose position was breech after 36 weeks of pregnancy.
